2007-2008 CLEVER

Collaborative Edition and Visualization Environment in Real-Time (CLEVER)

The goal of this industrial research project is to design an all-in-one collaborative visualization and editing tool, compatible with a maximum of visualization hardwares (personal computers, laptops, graphics workstations, consoles) and servers.

In this project, DS Improved developed an experimental framework to visualize terrains in network, using a quad-tree to store the terrain datas.  This first step enables rich details with progressive refinements on a standard personal computer.

The database that contains terrains meshes and associated datas (textures, objects, vegetation, avatars, sounds, …) is located on a server, and a client-server application manages concurrent accesses, downloads the content on-demand and synchronizes any changes in real-time.

Eventually the virtual world will be distributed on different servers (i.e. a powerful hardware) on the network.  The world is divided in zones and different servers manage different zones.  The virtual world can be huge with rich details while being visited by a multitude of connected clients.
