Consolidation and virtualization of servers

A big majority of Internet servers use a small part of their machines or memory resources (80/20). All these unused resources consume space in racks, and also a lot of energy. Moreover, the management cost and the risk associated with a hardware failure increase exponentially according to the number of servers in a datacenter.
The consolidation of servers consists in the use of a virtualization software (hyperviseur) allowing a physical server to host a large set of virtual machines. Each virtual machine has its own characteristics (RAM, disk capacity, number of processors dedicated or shared, ...) that can be changed as needed. Several hyperviseurs can help each other in balancing their virtual machines to optimize performance (VMotion - load balancing).
As those virtual machines are driven by software, it is possible to make backups (snapshots) without interruption, and even create models of machine types (templates).
As a result, the total cost of ownership for infrastructure is dropping down thanks to the economy in physical space and energy, ease of management through a centralized software interface, and maintaining performance by applying a physical architecture suited to virtualization.
